When bride-to-be Crista Dettelis shared that her mother’s 40-year-old wedding dress—and her grandmother’s 75-year-old headpiece—had been stolen from her apartment mailroom, she never expected her story to capture millions of hearts online. What began as a devastating loss quickly transformed into an inspiring moment of community support. As her story went viral, Crista was met with an outpouring of kindness from strangers, small businesses, and even a designer overseas. And when our team at David’s learned what happened, we knew we had to step in and help. We invited Crista to our Las Vegas store, where she was gifted a gown of her choice and accessories—turning heartbreak into a moment that felt, in her words, “like Cinderella.” We caught up with Crista to hear more about her experience, her wedding-day vision, and what this unforgettable journey has meant to her.
Honestly, I was completely devastated. At first it didn’t even feel real, and then it hit all at once. Those pieces weren’t just part of my wedding, they were part of my family’s history and I was so excited to wear them for my legal ceremony in Vegas. My mom’s dress is over 40 years old, and my grandmother’s headpiece is over 75 years old. It felt like generations of love and memories wrapped into something I was supposed to wear on one of the most important days of my life. Losing them felt deeply personal and irreplaceable.
My mom and I are very close she is my best friend, and wearing her dress felt like such a full-circle moment. It was a way to honor her, and to carry a piece of her and my dad’s 40 year love story, into mine. They have shown me what real love looks like so that was important to me. My grandmother and I were really close and she passed away last year, and I wanted to wear her veil so a piece of her would be with me when I said I do.. it wasn’t just about the dress and a veil, it was about what it represented: love, family, and legacy.
I honestly couldn’t believe it when David’s Bridal reached out and told me they were going to gift me a shopping spree and that I could pick anything I wanted ...a dress AND accessories!?! It felt surreal. After everything that had happened, that moment alone felt like such a turning point for me, like things were finally shifting in a positive direction and everything wasn’t ruined. It felt like a big exhale.
At first, I didn’t think anything could replace what I had lost and in reality I guess nothing really can. But when I found this dress, it just clicked. It made me feel beautiful, confident, and like myself... and that’s when I realized this dress now holds its own meaning. It now has its own story that I can pass down to my kid one day. What made it even more special was that my mom was able to fly in and be there for this experience, because she wasn’t able to be there when I chose my dress for the ceremony in Greece. Having her there meant everything to me. The news was also there covering the story, and it all felt like there is no way this is my reality right now! It was overwhelming in the best way. It was something I never could have even imagined.
They truly went above and beyond in every way. From the moment I arrived, I felt so taken care of and supported. The entire experience was so thoughtful and intentional. I honestly felt like I had my Cinderella moment, which is something every bride dreams of. Everyone at Davids was like my own personal fairy godmother. They were so kind, attentive, and genuinely invested in making it special for me. I’m so incredibly grateful for David’s Bridal’s generosity and for turning such a difficult situation into something so magical. This was an experience I will never forget!
I would tell them that even when things feel like they’re falling apart, it doesn’t mean the story is over. Things are always going to go wrong during wedding planning, but don’t lose sight of what actually matters...the love between you and your partner. That’s the reason for all of it. Try not to get lost in the stress, and remember that the meaning behind the day is so much bigger than anything that could go wrong. And don’t be afraid to share what you’re going through online! You never know who might show up for you. There is a community of women who understand. Don’t underestimate the power of social media. What started as one post during a really hard moment completely changed the outcome of my story because of companies like Davids Bridal.
I’m most looking forward to that moment of walking down the aisle and just taking it all in and marrying the love of my life. Just knowing everything that happened to get me there…. it makes the day feel even more meaningful. And now, having this new dress and the experience behind it, I think it will really feel like my happy ending.
