Her According to a rep for Valentino,” the design team created a strapless ivory silk point d’esprit tulle dress, which includes a pink hand-painted shaded train embroidered with satin flowers. Hispanic Wedding Traditions

by Carmen Ondonez

When my husband and I got married five years ago, we wanted to make sure that our Hispanic culture and traditions were reflected on our big day, but it was so overwhelming to blend so many customs into one ceremony. The key is to decide which traditions are most important to you and it can be easier than you think! Here are some to think about to help you get started:

Ceremony Traditions

  • The Lasso- In many Latin countries, such as Spain and Mexico, it’s traditional for a lasso or rosary beads to be placed around the couple’s shoulders in a figure eight shape. This symbolizes the unbreakable bond between the bride and groom and the protection of marriage.
  • Unity Candle- The bride and groom each light a candle after the wedding ceremony and then use each of their candles to light a third one together. This symbolizes unity and a new life together.
  • Blending of Sands- Similar to the unity candle, the bride and groom each have a vase filled with sand of a different color, which are combined into one vase. This symbolizes unity and eternity, since the sand grains can never be separated. My husband and I actually incorporated this custom in our own wedding and we still have our vase tucked away in a special place in our home!

Wedding Attire

  • The Mantilla Veil- The mantilla veil originated in Spain toward the end of the 16th century and is one of my favorites. The mantilla is a gorgeous veil with lace edging that can add instant Latin flair to any wedding dress. I’m in love with this one from David’s Bridal

Another easy way to add a latin flair to your big day is with some great Spanish music. To this day, I remember how much fun my husband and I had on the dance floor when “Cumbia” and “Puya” music (a traditional Colombian music genre with African roots) played during our wedding.

Homecoming dress hunting is a cinch when you know your signature style. Here’s how to find your perfect dress, based on your future plans.

The Next It Girl

You’re a social butterfly whose main incentive for finishing homework is so you can meet up with friends. When you’re not scoring invites to the best parties, you’re throwing them! This dress with its bright color, sequin and beading accents and pretty tulle, is the perfect fit for homecoming plus all those birthday, New Year’s and (soon enough!) college socials you’ll be invited to.

Susan Ashbrook’s Emmy Predictions

Monday, September 3rd, 2012

What do celebrities strutting the red carpet have in common with brides?  It’s all about the dress! With this year’s Emmy Awards just around the corner, I took the time to forecast a few Hollywood themes that are sure to influence the red carpet and brides.

Borrowing inspiration from the silver screen, classic “Old Hollywood” glamour and styles fit for a sexy siren will be prevalent.  Looks reminiscent of those seen on Mad Men and Downton Abbey will also have a strong presence, proving that everything old is new again.  Look for these fashion trends to capture all eyes and create just the right amount of  drama for the paparazzi – even if the photographer is your own.

Style #: (SWG494)

OLD HOLLYWOOD charm never goes out of style. If your figure resembles the killer curves of Hollywood (think Beyonce!), this silk Charmeuse gown is a perfect choice.  The beaded, sequin details of this dress add just the right touch of glamour to make a statement.

Style #: (CPK437)

Mad for MAD MEN?  It’s not hard to fall in love with 1960’s influenced fashion because it’s all about innocence.  A strapless silhouette is a perennial favorite for stars like Reese Witherspoon. The lace overlay and sweet pearl-like sequins on this style will make any bride red carpet ready.

Style #: (WG3482)

THE SIREN is a woman who is not afraid to turn heads.   One of the world’s most well known sirens, Angelina Jolie, stepped onto The Academy Award’s red carpet and proved that legs can be a woman’s sexiest assets.   This dress is perfect for the “siren” bride who is confident and self assured, important qualities for the “big day.”

Style #: (VW351000)

DOWNTON ABBEY has garnered fans all over the world, who enjoy following the romance, rivalry, and stunning fashion.   Vintage inspired gowns, like this one, are all about draping and softly sculpting the body.  This sophisticated gown is for a woman who still believes in fairy tales…and has finally found her very own prince charming.

Susan J.  Ashbrook – the author of Will Work for Shoes: The Business Behind Red Carpet Product Placement – has been behind the scenes of twenty Emmy Awards and is in the unique position to not only dish on all the fashion trends, but what really happens behind the scenes.  A pioneer in celebrity product placement, Susan has dressed over 7000 celebs including A-listers Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez and has worked with top stylists (Phillip Bloch, Rachel Zoe) and fashion brands (Lanvin, Harry Winston, Kenneth Cole, Herve Leger, Swarovski) alike.
