NY Fashion Week Inspired Looks for Less

By: Carmen Ordonez

Another New York Fashion Week has come and gone and many of us were left coveting the looks that went down the runway. But one thing I wasn’t coveting is the hefty price tag that comes along with the looks. So as your resident budget fashionista, I’ve gone on the hunt to find some runway inspired looks for less—your wallet can thank me later.

Designer J. Mendel featured several edgy and figure flattering dresses down the runway, including this A-line leather and lace corset dress. To get the look, without going too daring, consider this Short Jersey Dress with Full Lace Skirt from David’s Bridal. The V-neck will help elongate your neck and provide a slimming effect.

It was all about the glamour for the fashion house of Venexiana during New York Fashion Week, including this metallic dress with rosette detail. For an inspired look for less, check out this Fit and Flare Dress with Organza Rosette Detail from David’s Bridal. The fit and flare shape hugs your curves in all the right places and is sure to turn heads. It also comes in five different colors including black, pink and blue. Oh and did I mention it’s under $200—total score!

White and gold was seen all over the runways, including this number from Badgley Mischka. Chanel your inner golden goddess for less with this Sleeveless Key Hole Print Dress. The X shaped waist will help highlight the narrowest part of your waist and give you a stunning silhouette.

Formal Styles Fit For Every Personality

by Cassandra Morris

Where do you fall on the high school personality spectrum? Wherever it is, David’s Bridal has a dress that’s perfect for your winter dance!

The High Achiever

You’re on your way to getting into your dream college. But, you’ve spent so much time cramming for your SATs, doing extra credit work and volunteering, you’ve hardly had a chance to check out the latest trends! Classic style has always been more of your thing anyway, so try on this gorgeous floor-length gown. The silhouette is timeless while the metallic foil skirt is totally glam.

Style 231M24440

The Drama Queen

All of high school is a stage, and you want better lighting. Your iPod is loaded with Broadway hits, and this year, the lead in the school music is yours. Try this dramatic floor-length all-over sequin dress for your dance. It’s totally glamorous, and will look absolutely smashing with Old Hollywood hair and matte red lips.

The Fashionista

Trends? You set them. Fashion blogs? You write them. Some girls might be peeved that their style keeps getting jacked by other girls in school, but it’s not a big deal to you. By the time everyone else catches on, you’re already experimenting with the next big thing! Try this sparkle and chiffon high-low dress for your winter dance. The side high-low is ahead of the trend, and you can show off your killer heels!

Style 9651BZ8B

The Eco-Maniac

You love animals, are president of the environmental club and know more about global warming than most of your teachers. Your ideal date is a nature walk… in fact, if there’s any opportunity to be outdoors, you’ll take it! Try on this gorgeous ombre dress for your winter dance- the royal blue is reminiscent of the ocean, and there’s not a hint of fur anywhere.

Style 1099

The Artist

Drawing, photography, songwriting… you love it all, and you’d do it all day if your pesky math homework didn’t always get in the way. If you’re not designing and sewing your own dress, consider this gorgeous black gown. The sparkles and pleats are super-flattering, and it’ll still give you an air of mystery.

How to Dress Down Your Prom Dress

How to Dress Down Your Prom Dress
by Cassandra Morris

You’re totally in love with your prom dress. The color is oh-so flattering, the skirt makes dancing ten times more fun and putting it on makes you feel like Taylor Swift every time she’s ever won an award. If only you could wear it every day… or at least more than once!

If you’ve got a slew of summer parties coming up or are planning a big night out in the city, you can totally wear your prom dress again. All you have to do is dress it down a bit!

Add a Jacket
Tossing a jacket over your dress can instantly turn your prom gown into a more casual number. Pair a cropped denim or mini zip jacket with a long dress, or match a cute long blazer with a shorter dress.

Switch Your Shoes
Kick off your sky-high prom stilettos and slip on a pair of flat fashion shoes instead. If your dress is long and flowy, go for a pair of open-toed sandals. If your hem is above the knee, a pair of wooden wedges or ballet flats will do. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, lace up a pair of combat-esque boots to go with your prom dress for a punk rock princess vibe.

It’s All About the Hair
Instead of spending hours on an intricate up ‘do accented with a crystal comb, wear your hair in a more casual style. Go for messy, beachy summer waves, a flirty loose ponytail or an imperfect side braid to turn your entire ensemble into one less formal.

Change Your Jewelry
Accessories can dictate just how formal your outfit is. Trade delicate, precious-gem necklaces and bracelets for larger costume jewelry like this David’s Bridal black flower necklace and watch how your dress is instantly more wearable for every day events.

Play With Your Hem
If you wore a fitted, floor-length gown to prom, consider taking it to the tailor and turning it into a high-low hem instead. Or, have your dress shortened so it’s above-the-knee. That way you still get to wear the sweet neckline and fun sequins on the bodice that made you fall in love your dress in the first place.

Katrina’s Favorite Looks from the 2012 Met Ball

Katrina’s Favorite Looks from the 2012 Met Ball
by Katrina Mitzeliotis

The Met Ball is literally like the Oscars of fashion, practically trumping all of awards season combined with the glamorous avant-garde dresses and major star power. I had the opportunity to go, and it was so refreshing to see so much variety on the red carpet! If you want to emulate some of the major trends I saw that night, check out my favorite David’s Bridal picks below.

Peplum Detailing
Peplum detailing on skirts and dresses was a major trend for spring and summer on the runway, and it also ruled the red carpet at the Met Ball, with both Eva Mendes and January Jones showing off the trend. I love the detailing on this strapless dress—in fact, it’s almost the same color as January’s dress, (but is definitely more wearable)!

Plunging Necklines
So many stars opted to flaunt their assets with a plunging neckline, making it a major trend at the Met Ball. From Dianna Agron to Debra Messing and Camilla Belle, stars showed off the trend in all shapes, sizes and silhouettes. If you want to recreate the look, I recommend wearing a halter dress, like the gorgeous gown below.

Backless Dresses
Talk about bringing sexy back! From Rihanna to Cameron Diaz, so many stars looked stunning. Their bare backs left such a dramatic yet chic impression. You too can achieve the same result by wearing a dress like this to your next affair.

Florals
From Emma Stone’s embellished gown to Hailee Stienfeld and Sarah Jessica Parker, the stars exhibited that florals are a fitting choice for formalwear at any age! Whether you go for a gorgeous gown or a flirty frock, the trend is such a nice way to show off a different look at your next occasion, like this vibrant gown.

Cassandra’s Trip to NYC!

Cassandra’s Trip to NYC!
by Cassandra Morris

Hey prom girls! I spent the weekend coast-hopping. I flew from Los Angeles to New York City and right back again. It was a total whirlwind!

Since it’s prom shopping season, I was invited to talk on ABC World News Now and Inside Edition about the latest dress trends, and (bonus!) got to spend some time in the NYC David’s Bridal store checking out their huge selection.

At ABC World News Now, I was talking with host Paula Faris about my favorite David’s Bridal prom dresses that look like they were ripped right from the red carpet. Using Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and Mandy Moore as inspiration, I had three models show off an all-over sequin gown, a strapless red mermaid gown and a gorgeous, glittery ball gown.

It was my first time being a guest on ABC World News Now, and I wanted to stand out but still be a bit conservative. I chose a fuchsia dress with long sleeves and a full short skirt, and accessorized with a thick black belt and black wedges. What do you think of my look?

We finished taping just before midnight and I immediately hopped into a cab to go back to my hotel. I had to be hair and makeup ready at 8:15 a.m. to shoot a segment for Inside Edition. There was barely any time for beauty sleep… so I was running on pure adrenaline.

I also had the chance to appear on Inside Edition where I talked about the latest trends, prom dress codes that some schools have and how to tell if your dress makes the cut. I had two models show off some flattering yet appropriate prom dresses… and I wore an adorable little black dress from David’s Bridal!

Style 211S21820

My interview was mostly a close-up shot, so I chose a one-shoulder dress with cute flowers on the strap that added extra detailing. I accessorized by stacking champagne and gold-colored bracelets on one wrist, and donned the same black wedges that I wore the night before.

We wrapped about two hours of shooting, and I had to head straight back to the airport. Luckily I managed to sneak in two slices of New York pizza before I boarded the plane. Now I’m back in Los Angeles, and I can’t wait to do it all again!

Get the Look from Miami Beach International Fashion Week
by Carmen Ordonez

This past week I had the opportunity to check out some of the latest trends and fashions at the 14th Annual Miami Beach International Fashion Week. It’s actually one of the largest fashion events that gather Latin American and International designers from Ecuador to India.

Me at Miami Beach International Fashion Week

Of course, my eye for fashion on a budget immediately had me scoping out where I can get those same runway trends for a lot less. So here are my picks of my favorite looks, plus where you can get them on a budget.

Colorful Prints
This spring, we’re seeing tons of colorful prints and this was no exception during designer Megha Grover’s collection. The Indian designer has rocked the fashion world with her originality and love for fun prints. This beaded charmeuse print gown from David’s Bridal is the perfect option for recreating this look and staying right on trend. And how great would this dress look at a spring or summer wedding?
Designer: Megha Grover

Lace
I’m a big fan of lace and this dress from designer Marina Banovic was one of my favorites. To get this feminine yet stylish look, check out this strapless all over lace dress.
Designer: Marina Banovic

Bright Pops of Color
One trend seen across the runway was bright pops of color from orange to pink, like this one from Peruvian designer, Eduardo de Las Casas. If you’re looking for a show stopping look, this gorgeous two-toned fuchsia and orange dress will surely do the trick.
Designer: Eduardo de las Casas

High and Low Hemlines
Designer Art of Shade, known for his edgy collections, featured several high and low hemlines, which are a huge trend right now. This David’s Bridal dress adds the perfect mix between flirtatiousness and sophistication.
Designer: Art of Shade

What trend are you looking forward to trying this spring and summer?
