Behind-the-Scenes With Katrina at The Hollywood Style Awards

by Katrina Mitzeliotis

For the first time the Hollywood Style Awards took place in New York this year, occurring on the eve of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, right in the middle of all the action at Lincoln Center. While it’s definitely one of the most hectic times for me, the show was so much fun! I started the day at my office, prepping questions for the red carpet later that night, before heading over to Angelo David Salon where I got glam thanks to their hair and makeup team.

Next, it was time to get dressed! Since the awards were in a new city, I thought I would celebrate with a new silhouette. Personally, I often stick to the same style when choosing a dress – but not this year. I opted for a long blue halter dress, complete with two side-slits, to embrace a longer hemline. Since I’m short I’ve always been nervous that a long dress wouldn’t work on my frame, but the slit definitely helped elongate my figure, while a little hint of skin broke up the ensemble.

If you want to try the look yourself, I recommend this dress from David’s Bridal. I love the way it cinches the waist and the slit is definitely one of the hottest trends of the season! It’s a sexy way to show some skin without taking the trend too over the top – and it’s perfect for a formal affair.

At the show, Katie Holmes made her first public appearance. She looked stunning in Carolina Herrera as she introduced the designer herself, who took home the ‘Designer of the Year’ title. A slew of stars came out to honor top stylists and makeup artists, including Nicole Richie, Amy Adams, Alison Williams and more. I had so much fun at the show, and even got to chat with Ed Westwick to get the scoop on the final season of “Gossip Girl.” Late that night, we headed over to Stone Rose Lounge to celebrate.

What’s in Katrina’s Closet?
Staples Fit for Every Style

by Katrina Mitzeliotis

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a penchant for dresses. While I’ve gotten older and my taste has expanded, I’m definitely still drawn to feminine looks—but you won’t just find dresses hanging in my closet! From a slew of blazers to colorful accessories, there are a few personal staples that make up my wardrobe. Rather than conform to what you think you should always have handy, I think it’s much more important to build your staples around your sense of style. Here are some staples from my personal closet I can’t live without.

Blazers
I must admit, I have a slight obsession with blazers –but lucky they are on-trend right now! A great jacket in the right proportions can really tie a whole look together. From colorful jackets to cropped jackets that I wear over dresses, I have found so many ways to update this personal staple.

The Black Dress
I may be born and raised in NY, but you would never know it if you peeked inside my colorful closet! While I am not a fan of the ‘we only wear black’ stereotype, there is a reason why the little black dress has never gone out of style– it’s SO practical. Whether I have a cocktail party to go to for work at the last minute or I’m attending a family affair, the little black dress has never let me down. I recommend opting for something more demure, like the below dress on the left, so it can work in a variety of settings.

Colorful accessories
While color seems to be everywhere lately, I’ve always believed that a pop of color or a fun print is the best way to update your look—it’s also a great way to break up a basic get-up if your style is on the classic side. For those who may think it’s a fleeting trend, I couldn’t disagree with you more– a red bag or even hair piece will never go out of style!

Style FLUTTER

Belts
Honestly, I would belt my pajamas if I could! Not only do I think that a belt can really finish off an outfit, but I like the way it defines my waist. Belts and sashes aren’t just for basic outfits, either. Sometimes it’s nice to dress up a basic trench or LBD with something feminine and unexpected, like this embellished option.

Style G21755

A great party dress
I love having an excuse to throw on a fun and sexy dress – who doesn’t?! If you’re looking for a new frock, I recommend sticking to a silhouette that really flatters your figure, so whenever you throw it on you feel confident and ready to dance the night away. This is a great party dress, and the embellished detailing makes it a perfect option for holiday dressing.

PlanningThe Bachelorette Party
by Katrina Mitzeliotis

While bachelorette parties in movies always seem to incorporate pink cocktails and corny games, there are many ways to celebrate. I recently experienced a very traditional bachelorette party for one of my closest girlfriends. Since she was the first of our group to get engaged, we thought the best way to celebrate would be in Vegas. In a couple of years it probably won’t be so easy to round up a big group of girls for a trip to Vegas, so we seized the opportunity to celebrate in a big way!

Luckily, this trip didn’t end in a Bridesmaids movie style debacle. We stayed at the Cosmopolitan hotel and planned a variety of activities. From a nice dinner to a day at the Encore Beach Club pool party, the trip managed to strike the perfect balance between relaxing and fun. We surprised her with decorations in the room and a basket, which included a towel with her new last name embroidered on it that she can use after the wedding. Another cute option could have been this personalized super cute bathing suit, which would be perfect for our days lounging poolside.

Planning a friend’s bachelorette party doesn’t have to include travel or be over-the-top—as long as you’re creative you can plan the perfect day!

If the bride-to-be is more of a homebody, brunch and a day at the spa would be a nice option. In fact, many places offer specials to accommodate groups and make the day that much more memorable. Kick off this type of bash with a chic spa-inspired invitation.

Wine-tasting is another great option for the bride-to-be who wants an alternative to a big night out. Whether you turn this into a weekend getaway or just go for the day, you’re bound to enjoy the festivities while trying new flavors.

For the fitness enthusiast, a private yoga or spin class could be a great way to work out all together while still having fun. Finish the day with a relaxing mani/pedi and leave guests with this super cute manicure set.

If you’re looking to keep it classic and fun, you can also plan a cocktail party or a dinner. Make the bride-to-be’s favorite foods, mix up some creative cocktails and create a playlist of her favorite tunes and get ready to have fun.

Regardless of what you decide to do, it should celebrate your friendship and represent what she loves to do the most!

Planning a Celeb-Worthy Wedding for Less
by Katrina Mitzeliotis

While so many celebs are known for throwing over-the-top affairs, lately we’re seeing a shift when it comes to saying ‘I Do.’ Rather than go all out, the celeb set is really into weddings that are both intimate and personal. Brides like Camila Alves to Drew Barrymore prove that you don’t need an extravagant affair—it really all comes down to the details. From the invitations to the place cards, read on for ways you can throw an affair just like a celeb, without having to break the bank.

Invitations:

We’re seeing a huge DIY trend lately, and it’s a great way to save a little money on your special day especially when you’re having a smaller wedding like Camilla and Matt did. Come up with a creative and personal way to share the news of the big day in your own words with a DIY invitation kit like this one.

Style DB50039KIT

Place cards:

I recently attended a wedding for a bride who loves vintage-inspired details, so she incorporated that into her special day. Rather than have place cards on a table, guests took old fashion keys hanging on the wall with their table number. If you are looking for a creative way to display your place cards, try putting them on decorated clothes pins—it adds such a nice natural touch.

Style 50024

Well wishes:

Having guests sign a large photo or frame at a wedding is a great keepsake for the bride and groom to remember who attended. I once went to a wedding with a photo booth, where guests snapped a shot and then glued the image into a book next to their well wishes—it was such a fun way to share in the special day! A great alternative to the book is this card box—I love how compact it is.

Style 9162

Decorations:

A lovely alternative to small candle votives are lanterns, especially if you’re planning a rustic wedding like Drew did. They add a nice touch to the table and really tie the whole affair together.

Katrina Attends a Bridal Shower
by Katrina Mitzeliotis

While bridal showers are definitely one of the wedding traditions that have been around for as long as most of us can remember, I’m always impressed by the unique wedding ideas that people plan to make the day creative and fun for guests.

This past weekend, I attended an afternoon bridal shower, where guests mingled and sipped on white sangria. From the bow-tie pasta to the refreshing beverages, the event was so summer-appropriate. The table was decorated with bright pink floral arrangements and adorable, mini-manicure sets and macaroons—the perfect take-away treat!

Rather than play a slew of games, guests watched the bride-to-be respond to questions her fiancé had already answered. After she gave her response, a video recording of her future groom shared his answer. This cute activity reminded me of the ‘newlywed’ game—and it also allowed those in attendance to sit back and have fun!

At the shower, I opted for a bright dress that kept me feeling cool and looking chic in the heat. I paired the dress with long, dangling earrings to dress up my look.

I love the romantic feel of the pair below—and you can easily re-wear them for a glam night out!

You also can never go wrong with a festive dress. It’s such a summertime staple—and it works so well with a pair of wedges. I love the stylish, yet classic, vibe you can achieve with the pair of wedges below.

Katrina Heads to the Young Hollywood Awards
by Katrina Mitzeliotis

My company organizes two award shows a year—the Style Awards in the fall and the Young Hollywood Awards in the summer. I always love heading out to LA, and in this case, I was heading out for the Young Hollywood Awards.

While lots of planning may go into the show, the day of the show is all about getting glam! My first stop was to the Jose Eber salon in Beverly Hills, where they did my makeup for the night. I decided on a bold lip, so to balance it out I kept my eye makeup much lighter—but we didn’t neglect the lashes! Personally, I feel my best for a big event when my lashes are looking long and luscious.

Next, I headed over to a salon a couple of blocks away where Kerastase gave me the perfect waves. Originally I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my hair, but the go-to look never lets me down! While the style seemed so soft, I was so impressed with how well they stayed throughout the night. When in doubt, it’s best to rely on a dress you really like to wear—that way you’re confident knowing you look great.

I slipped into my dress and finished the look off with key accessories. Since I’ve worn this dress before to a recent wedding, I changed it up with statement jewelry—a cocktail ring, gold cuff and bold earrings. If you’re looking to re-wear a dress to a wedding or special event, a textured clutch like this one from David’s Bridal or bold fashion shoe, can completely change your look.

After working the red carpet, I got to enjoy the show and after party. With celebs like Bella Thorne, Sophia Bush, January Jones and Hailee Steinfeld in attendance, the turnout was great and the night was so much fun!
