Galina Gown Meets Old Hollywood: A Dream Marriage Proposal

Galina Gown Meets Old Hollywood: A Dream Marriage Proposal

By Sarah Pease

After each awards show in Hollywood there is no shortage of magazines and websites splashed with photos of starlets donning gorgeous gowns, and season after season some of the best dressed women are those that channeled Old Hollywood glamour. The figure-hugging shape and sweetheart neckline of this demure yet sultry Galina Signature wedding gown served as the inspiration for a marriage proposal fit for a 1940’s screen siren or a modern starlet.

Your future-fiancée will think she is having a girl’s day spent shopping and going to the spa with her best friend, but the day has actually been planned down to the last detail to be the day of her dreams.  Everything begins as your sweetheart and friend set off for one of the chicest shopping streets in Hollywood, Rodeo Drive.  As they meander and peer into the ornately decorated window displays, her friend will suggest venturing into one of the well-known boutiques where they’ll try on some of the to-die-for dresses and shoes, but what your future-fiancée does not know is that you secretly contacted the store prior to her visit and arranged for her favorite pieces to be delivered to the spa.  After visiting some of Hollywood’s most famous boutiques, the women will head to the spa for an afternoon of starlet-worthy pampering.  As their spa trip comes to an end, she’ll be surprised when an exquisitely-wrapped garment bag from the store she visited earlier greets her at the spa. A classic car will whisk her to one of Hollywood’s most iconic spots, the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she’s shown to a dream suite and says goodbye to her friend and hello to her beauty team.  They’ll create the perfect hair & makeup look and as she changes into her glamorous, red-carpet ready outfit, she is transformed into a vintage screen siren. An impeccably dressed butler will show her to the hotel’s terrace bar that overlooks the pool, where a “red carpet” rose petal path will lead you to an intimate table-for-two hidden amongst the palm trees.  You’ll be waiting for her at the end of the red carpet with an envelope with her name on it. The outside reads “The Academy Award for Best Leading Lady” and on the inside is her name.  You drop to one knee and share that you would truly be the winner, for the rest of your lives, if she says yes!

Like the classic and glamorous Galina Signature gown, this marriage proposal idea is reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood and will be remembered forever.

Monday Monday! Prom Night Inspired By Oscars!

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Good Morning DB Readers, Happy Monday Monday! Prom season is right around the corner, and we are so excited for all of the girls who have found their dream dresses for their big night! Even if you’re still looking, David’s Bridal is a great place for inspiration if you’re looking for the perfect dress, or you can find a great dress with us!  This weekend we were featured in a New York Times story about Prom girls looking to celebrities for inspiration on what to wear to their prom! Read the story below, or read it here!

“I’ve got girls whipping out their iPhones,” Stacey Rywelski, the manager of David’s Bridal in Long Island City, said the other day. “They’ll say, ‘What do you guys have that looks like this?’ ”

Jennifer Lawrence, named as best actress, in a Dior gown at the Oscars in February. The dress has prom potential.

Ms. Rywelski was describing the annual shopping frenzy that takes place in America shortly before that hallowed high-school ritual, prom, customarily in May or June. And this year, she and others say, the Academy Awards in February, quickly digested by style commentators, have been a particularly fertile source of ideas for young shoppers and the designers who cater to them.

“Every girl is taking red-carpet inspiration,” said Katherine Vargas, 16, a senior at Robert F. Kennedy Community High School in Flushing who watched the Oscars intently, zooming in on Jennifer Lawrence, who won best actress in a Dior couture gown. “I loved her in ‘The Hunger Games’ and on every red carpet, she stuns me. She inspired me to look for a blush dress.”

So Ms. Vargas took to Google, searching for “blush prom dress” and found a strapless fit and flare dress with cut-glass beads from David’s Bridal.

Alexi Buliavac’s choice, which she bought for $378 from Unique Vintage, is a simple Night Moves by Allure blue dress with sparkles on the waistline and a sweetheart neckline. “I got the color from the Oscars,” said Ms. Buliavac, 17, a senior at John Burroughs High School who lives in Burbank, Calif. “I liked the silver and blue dresses like Amy Adams’s dress and Penélope Cruz’s. I wanted that for prom.”

The Oscar ceremony is broadcast when prom issues of teen magazines hit the newsstands, many dresses are already in stores and girls are planning their looks. This year’s crop of red-carpet trends (neutral colors, strapless necklines, beading and sequins) had a sweetness that seemed particularly prom-friendly. “A great return to feminine beauty, with sweetheart necklines and the emphasis on hourglass silhouettes,” said Zoey Washington, the owner of Littlebird, a lifestyle company for teenagers on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

In his column for Slate, the Barneys creative ambassador Simon Doonan was somewhat more acidic. “Is it fashion? No.” he wrote of the styles that prevailed at this year’s Oscars. “Is it a parade of conventional prom dresses? Yes, I am rather afraid it is.”

But as Mr. Doonan said in a recent phone interview, “when a girl goes to the prom, she wants a silver-screen, old-school moment of glamour.”

“It’s not got a lot to do with high fashion,” he noted.

Hollywood has long figured in the dreams (and nightmares) of prom-bound teenage girls: The daisy-adorned dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor in “A Place in the Sun” reverberated through junior departments for years; less so the homemade ones of “Carrie” and “Pretty in Pink.” But only in recent years, with the rise of stylists and endless Internet images, has the focus been on the red carpet, which, like prom, is “a highly crafted theatrical moment that is pure drama,” said Ann Shoket, the editor in chief of Seventeen magazine.

The Oscar ceremony is far from the only event to influence decisions. By February, Carter Rutherfurd, 17, had already bought two possible dresses for her prom at T. C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C.: a tangerine Nicole Miller dress and a dark green dress from J. Crew inspired by a Vera Wang gown that Mila Kunis wore to the Golden Globes in 2011.

But then she saw Jessica Chastain’s copper Armani Privé Oscars gown. “It took my breath away,” Ms. Rutherfurd said. “It was simple, classy and so elegant. I love the color, and the sparkle on it made it stand out.” Using Pinterest and Rent the Runway and with a budget of $250, she said, “I am looking for a dress similar to that for my own.”

Some girls are looking at photos of after-parties and even to broadcasters for inspiration. Natalie Steele, 17, loved the black Tony Ward couture dress that Giuliana Rancic wore as a red-carpet correspondent. “It was simple and classy, it’s what I want when I go to prom,” said Ms. Steele, who is a senior at Santa Susana High School and lives in Simi Valley, Calif. With $150 to spend, she found a black strapless dress from David’s Bridal that was form fitting and flared out at the bottom. “The dressing rooms don’t have mirrors,” she said. “I walked out and my mom and I saw it at the same time. I knew this was the one.”

Others like Ms. Buliavac find inspiration merely in the color, or detail, of an Oscars dress. Samantha Parrish, 17, who attends Garrison Forest School and lives in Randallstown, Md., is planning on sewing her own prom dress à la Molly Ringwald’s character in “Pretty in Pink”— though arguably with a more sophisticated influence. “I liked Adele’s dress,” said Ms. Parrish, referring to the “Skyfall” singer. “I’m thinking of that design with sleeves and a long dress, maybe in sheer navy.”

Julie Durocher, the design director for the dress brand Jovani Fashions, said that after the awards, stores called the company looking for champagne and blush hues like the one Ms. Lawrence favored. Fortunately, she had plenty.

“I’m making sure we’re right there with the Oscar look, so that when somebody wants to buy a dress, they don’t have to wait till next year,” Ms. Durocher said, since it takes from 6 to 12 months for a dress to go from her sketchbook to retail.

Having dresses in stores that reflect Oscars trends is partly luck, said Lisa DiBello, prom and adult-occasion buyer for David’s Bridal. “We carry so many looks from the minimal to the heavily embellished that we’re bound to have something that is similar to what is on the red carpet,” she said. “If we saw a great dress this year, we could do it for 2014.”

The crystal ball can also be helpful. “We had forecast beads and sequins would be hot like what we saw on Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jessica Chastain and Amanda Seyfried,” said Omid Moradi, the chief executive for the line Faviana. “Gold is very hot right now over silver. We have a dress in our collection similar to Renée Zellweger’s.”

“Similar” has become a key word, rather than “knockoff.”

“Girls are less in interested in ‘ripped from the red carpet’ than looking to these celebs as icons,” Ms. Shoket said. “It’s about channeling the energy. You want Jennifer Lawrence’s girliness, or Rihanna’s flirty sex appeal or Taylor Swift’s sweet glamour rather than being a one for one.”

As when Kate Middleton married and designers rushed to copy her Alexander McQueen gown, replicas of famous Oscars dresses are available from some companies online, but they’re generally sold only showing a photo of the original dress, so quality, design and detail are somewhat up to chance. (Though Mr. Doonan noted: “You’re going to drink and fall around and sweat, so a couture dress would inhibit you, and you wouldn’t have such a good time. It’s better to have a copy of a copy of a copy.”) ABS Allen Schwartz is a dressmaking company once known for outright copies of red-carpet wear, but no more, said the designer Allen Schwartz. “I didn’t like the publicity, “ he said. “It kind of takes away from the creativity.”

But “you’d see all of those Oscars trends represented in our evening line,” he said. “We have the blush pinks, we have long black gowns with studding.” Mr. Schwartz agreed that this Oscars season is particularly open to translation into prom looks. “Especially today with all the young starlets, the Jennifer Lawrences, they’re much more contemporary than the Hollywood of 10 years ago,” he said.

Not too contemporary, however.

“One thing we’re particularly attuned to this year is a new level of modesty,” Ms. Shoket said. “It’s not about shocking people with crazy cutouts or incredibly sexy dresses or things that make parents go bonkers.”

The Perfect Mother-of-the-Bride Dress

The Perfect Mother-of-the-Bride Dress

By Carmen Ordonez

You probably pictured your daughter’s wedding dress since she broke the news that she was engaged. But now it’s time to pick your own dress and you might be feeling at a loss. Sure it’s your daughter’s big day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look fabulous yourself. Gone are the days of frumpy Mother-of-the-Bride dresses, here are some tips and dresses to help you look stylish on the big day.

Don’t wait until the last minute to start looking for your dress. Give yourself at least three to four months in case your dress needs to be altered. Also keep in mind the location of the wedding.  If it’s an outdoor wedding, look for easy breezy styles made out of breathable fabrics. This long jersey dress from David’s Bridal is the perfect choice. The fabric will allow you to move comfortably, and you’ll definitely make a statement when you leave the room with this open back detail. It’s absolutely stunning and a steal for only $119.

Peplums made their way into the fashion scene last year and they’re not going away anytime soon. This peplum dress manages to combine both style and sophistication in one piece. The knee length skirt makes it age appropriate, while the all-over lace adds a nice chic touch. This particular silhouette is also great for those with a straight shape, since the peplum flare gives the illusion of an hourglass figure.

This Cross Over Bodice Gown from David’s Bridal is elegance at its best. It’s ideal for a formal black-tie affair. The rushing detail in the waist highlights the shape, while the ¾ sleeves gives just the right amount of coverage.

This short satin dress is a perfect Mother-of-the-Bride dress. The royal blue goes great with almost any skin tone and the satin jacket provides coverage for those chilly spring nights. It can also be removed, for a dress that can easily be worn time and time again.

Save vs. Splurge, Wedding Edition: Where to Spend, Where to Scrimp

Save vs. Splurge, Wedding Edition: Where to Spend, Where to Scrimp

BY CATEY HILL

From the white flowy dress to the candlelit aisle, the five-tiered cake to the gorgeous bouquets, you’ve probably imagined your wedding day since you were a little girl. But now that you’re actually planning it, reality is setting in.  Of course you want the fairytale — I mean, who doesn’t?! — but you can only spend so much, so it’s important to figure out where you’ll splurge, and where you’ll cut costs.

To figure this out, first, you’ll need to make a wedding budget (I know, you hate that word, but I swear it’s not that bad – use the David’s Bridal MyEvent wedding planner site and it’s super-easy to do it!). Then, look at the list of all the things you will spend money on for your wedding.  Check out the budget I created to help you figure this out.  Now, rank that list in terms of what’s most important to you and what’s least important; spend the most on what’s most important to you and the least on what’s not.

OK, so that might have seemed a little overwhelming.  I mean, where do you rank all those things?! You probably really want to know what married people and wedding planners say is great to splurge on and worth it so scrimp on. Don’t worry, I talked to them and got some advice.  Here’s the scoop:
Where to save
It used to be that to get an amazing dress you had to go to a boutique or super high-end department store. Not anymore.  David’s Bridal has Vera Wang dresses - yes, the Vera Wang! – for under $1,700, some even under $1,000, plus other amazing luxe designers like Melissa Sweet and Oleg Cassini (hello, he dressed Jackie O — one of the most timeless style icons ever!). Another big way to save is on food and the bar (if this isn’t the top of your priority list).  Don’t have a fancy sit-down dinner — your guests will have just as much fun with a simple buffet or passed around tapas– and serve beer, wine and one signature cocktail (you and your soon-to-be bubby can pick it together!) rather than a full-on open bar.

Where to splurge

Don’t scrimp on the photos and video of the wedding (these are things you’ll have in frames in your home for rest of your life and give to your grandchildren!).  So hire a reliable photographer and maybe even a videographer so you can make sure that perfect moment is captured … in high def of course!  Added bonus: Your friends and family can snap more pics of your day for free so you have even more keepsakes!  The other thing you should splurge on — at least for one night — is your honeymoon. Spend time with your new hubby in an amazing setting, even if it’s just for a night or two.
