Weddings these days are all about personalization. Couples are looking for ways to make their wedding decor and overall vibe represent them, their relationship, and their families. And since there isn’t a rule that says you have to do most of the popular traditions at your wedding (despite what your mother might tell you!), one of the easiest ways to make your wedding feel more you is to leave out the traditional parts that don’t really mesh with your ideals or preferences.
Here are five wedding traditions you can definitely leave out on your big day.
1. Having your dad walk you down the aisle.
While some brides (and dads!) love this tradition and look forward to it, many brides are uncomfortable with the patriarchal roots of this tradition or just don’t have great relationships with their fathers. So if you want to walk with both of your parents, your mom, your stepdad, or just walk alone, it’s really just a personal choice.
2. The first dance.
If you’re having dancing at your wedding, there will need to be some sort of first dance…but it doesn’t have to have you and your new husband or wife at the center of attention. If you’re not big dancers or just don’t want all eyes on you, have the DJ invite all the guests to join you on the floor for the first dance.
3. The wedding cake.
While we’re all about the wedding dessert, it doesn’t have to be cake! If you’re really more pie people (or love candy or donuts or some other sweet!), feel free to serve that instead.
4. The garter toss.
Not comfortable with the idea of flashing some leg at your wedding? No worries; just skip this moment entirely! If you leave out the tossing of the bouquet too (and something tells us your single friends won’t mind), no one will even notice it didn’t happen.
5. The white dress.
Whether white just isn’t your color or you’d really rather wear something else, it’s totally fine to skip the traditional white gown on your wedding day. More and more brides are walking down the aisle in great tones like blush, champagne, and sterling! Check out our GREAT new fall 2013 dresses that are on trend and completely budget friendly!
