Australia and the Little Black Skirt
by Cassandra Morris
After a 15-hour flight, I arrived in South Australia slightly delirious but totally stoked to finally explore the continent down under. I was prepared to greet Aussies with a friendly “G’day, mate,” to spy kangaroos and koalas, and to see what the deal was with Ugg boots. What I wasn’t prepared for was the weather.
I knew I was leaving an L.A. heat wave for winter temps, but I packed for a much milder sort of cold than what South Australia was experiencing. My flimsy Los Angeles sun dresses and cardigans were not going to cut it, even with tights. I needed to add a new piece to my wardrobe, stat…one that could fit in my already overstuffed carry-on suitcase and that wouldn’t eat up my travel funds. I still wanted to save room in my budget for adventures…like meeting kangaroos!
After a quick search of an Aussie shopping district, I found the perfect solution: a thick black knit form-fitting skirt that hit just above my knee. It was the perfect day-to-night piece and literally went with every top I packed.
Paired with thick tights, this little black skirt kept me toasty warm as I romped around wildlife parks, museums and chocolate cafes during the day. At night, I wore it for dinners with my new Aussie friends. When I finally got to Sydney, I even saw a show at the Sydney Opera House in it! Now that is what I call a versatile wardrobe piece.
The funny thing is I hadn’t bought a little black skirt or even a little black dress in ages. I had forgotten how easy they are to wear and pair with things you already own. It’s funny how you sometimes have to switch up your everyday scenery or travel a long way to rediscover yourself.
My Australian little black skirt crossed the border back into the U.S. with me and is safely tucked in my bureau, waiting for fall temps to come. Now, I’m all about adding a little black dress to my fall fashion arsenal, too. I’ve got my eye on Style 1213 by David’s Bridal. With a tight skirt and fun blousy sleeves, it’s a total chameleon outfit…you can dress it up or down depending on the shoes and accessories you choose!
Australia was amazing, but I’m glad to be back on U.S. soil. Have you taken any fun trips this year?
