My First Wedding Anniversary
While my husband, Damien and I were planning our wedding, we found books and magazines that revealed some pretty interesting rules of etiquette on virtually every detail of wedding planning. We also stumbled across some “traditional” yet completely unfamiliar ways to celebrate wedding anniversaries. Apparently, US traditions date as far back as the middle ages, and dictate that couples present each other with gifts made from paper, cotton and leather for their first, second and third wedding anniversaries, respectively. While it was fascinating to learn about these cultural customs, my husband and I are far removed from such traditions. We decided that we would start are our own traditions.
So, rather than paper or cotton, I found a new way to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. Since it rained on our honeymoon, I decided to surprise Damien with our very first cruise, a second honeymoon. The fun was in keeping the secret since I had purchased the tickets in advance. To personalize the gift, a graphic designer friend of mine mocked up these fabulous boarding passes that described each destination on our Caribbean adventure.
The cruise experience was amazing, and when it did rain, we were back at sea and off to our next port. But the best part were the formal dining nights when I would get to wear my David’s Bridal gowns, including my favorite one shoulder number to dinner and dancing.
Since our budget was tight this year, it meant getting really creative with ideas on what to give. I knew I wanted to surprise him with something truly special and original, so I chose a wedding photo he hadn’t seen before and printed my wedding vows on it. He was moved by the uniqueness of the gift, and totally impressed by the beautiful design!
Try fun activities like cooking a romantic dinner or baking a cake together, or even going on a long bike ride or a picnic in the park. Consider writing a love letter, putting a message in a bottle, or creating a bouquet with love notes, poems or love coupons. Whatever you decide to do, make it special and make it yours.
It is my intention to celebrate every year together just as our relationship began: full of surprises, spontaneous adventures and most of all, laughter. Happy Anniversary!
