Fit & Fabulous: Tips for the Big Day and BeyondAugust 16th, 2011
It’s never too late to make your wedding day plan and stick to it. Here are a few simple tips to help you look and feel your best on your Big Day.
Take Inventory & Stock Up
Set goals! It all starts with establishing goals that are achievable, realistic and measurable (i.e. pounds, inches, hours, miles). Think about where you are now and visualize where you want to be. Take a before-and-after picture—it’s a great way to actually see your results and become your own success story. Stock up with all the tools you’ll need to reach your goals: supportive friends, a new pair of cross-trainers and a positive attitude.
Eat clean! That means exactly what it sounds like. Fuel up with clean, healthy food choices and your body will thank you with healthy, glowing skin, a fit body you can be proud of and an elevated mood. Build your meals around vegetables and fruits rather than meat and potatoes. Choose lean protein sources, low-fat dairy and whole grains to see and feel a difference in your body’s performance.
Skip the fast food and any refined sugars, processed and pre-packaged foods whenever possible. They have a bad reputation for a reason. Eating junk will make you feel—well, junky. It can wreak havoc on your complexion, your waistline and your bottom line.
Stay hydrated! Drinking water is so important to look good and feel your best every day. It’s no secret that H2O aids in digestion, detoxifies your body, reduces bloating and helps you lose weight. How much water each day? Take your weight, divide that number by two and voila! That’s the number of ounces of water you should drink a day! Still think you’re drinking enough water? Think again! Choose water over sodas, juices and anything full of difficult-to-pronounce chemicals, and feel the difference! Invest in a filtered water bottle to save money and protect the environment.
Get moving! Start an exercise plan that fits your lifestyle. Choose aerobic activities you enjoy like walking, jogging, cycling or swimming. Not sure what you like? Try them all and some new activities you’ve heard about (like Zumba or pilates). If you’re not sweating after ten minutes of working out, chances are you need to work harder to increase your heart rate and effectively burn calories. Gradually build up to working out five to six days/week for at least 60 minutes for noticeable changes in your life and your figure. Morning workouts are ideal. It’s one thing you can check off your “to- do” list early and it revs up your metabolism, making your body a fat burning furnace. But if mornings don’t work for you, opt for a midday or evening sweat session – the most important thing is to get a workout in, period. Already active? To see a difference in your body, amp up the frequency of your workouts, gradually increasing the intensity and duration.
Learn about strength training! Incorporate some kind of strength training into your routine. Lift weights, use resistance bands or learn how to use your own body weight to work all the muscles in your body at least twice a week.
Not sure where to start? Try a Power Sculpt class at the gym or yoga, and learn to how to increase muscle tone and build your strength in a group fitness setting. Think being a cardio queen is the only way to change your body?! Think again. Strength training increases lean muscle mass (not bulk!) which increases your metabolism (even while you’re sleeping), and helps you reach your fitness goals faster.
Not used to planning or sticking to a regimen? Find a partner who has the workout habit and is willing to help keep you accountable! Working out with a friend, family or groom-to-be makes fitness fun and it’s something you can continue to do long after the wedding. Regular exercise can add years to your healthy life together.
