Fashion Friday! “Lemon zest” is the latest hot color from Pantone!

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Good Morning DB Readers and Happy Fashion Friday! You through Emerald Green was the hottest color for 2013, right?

While emerald earned that distinction, “lemon zest” is the latest must-have addition to your wardrobe (the group announces on-trend palettes for each season). The super-bright color, with its slightly greenish cast, is sure to brighten things up, but it isn’t the easiest shade to wear.

If you’re feeling bold, opt for skinny jeans paired with a crisp white shirt, or a floaty dress and neutral accessories. If that makes you feel like you should be handing out sunglasses, settle for a pop of the sunny color in shoes, a bag or a stack of bright bangles.

David’s Bridal has a plethora of colors in yellow, but our closest color to Lemon Zest is definitely Canary! Take a peek at our great bridesmaids dresses in that hue!

Technological Thursday! 7 Fashion Apps for Every Personality

Thursday, May 23rd, 2013

The days of mallrats and hours wasted wandering through a department store aimlessly browsing are very nearly over. Mobile fashion shopping apps are the future: Why browse a catalog when you can get filtered results based on your fashion interests right on your smartphone? In fact, shopping is increasingly going online.

Much of that online traffic comes through apps. And many of these apps feature Pinterest-like items that display a fashion trend, which users can save to their personal collections for later use. Others make your shopping day easier, plotting out what stores are close to you and giving you directions. Still others actually save you money, display stores with current discounts and alerting you when a store with a deal is nearby. And the social element is huge.

Pose cofounder Alisa Gould-Simon said, “Social plays a huge role in fashion discovery — consumers have long looked to one another to see what they were wearing — so now this habit is being magnified and accelerated with the help of social and digital media.” Whatever kind of shopper you are — whether you’re super organized, you’re too lazy to leave your apartment or you’re just searching for a good deal— these are the top shopping apps for every personality.

Pose fulfills all your fashion needs in oneapp. Browse through styles, organize items you like and shop for certain items like skirts or shoes all within the app. Users can see what top bloggers, brands and celebs are wearing and posting to the app, then organize items into personal collections, such as ‘shoes,’ ‘accessories’ and ‘style inspiration.’ After taking a photo of a fashion item or outfit on themselves, users can share via Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.

Go Try It On is a social style network, meaning you can scroll through friends’ photos, as well as “Like” or comment. Filter who you follow based on your style preferences, or follow a bunch of different users for a wider variety of styles. A discover tab displays Featured, Popular and Recent posts, and a Connect tab suggests popular celebs, bloggers and fashionistas within the app to follow.

Cloth lets you document your favorite outfits, then add notes, tags and categories that will make searching for them later easier. For example, say you have a great office outfit that transitions to evening. Categorize the outfit as Evening and Work. Then search for that outfit later when you don’t feel like putting together a new ensemble.

StyleBook keeps a digital inventory of everything in your closet. Users take photos of every item they own, then the app enables them to sort looks without physically trying anything on. Although some may see this as more work since you have to take photos of everything, just think of the outfit coordinating you can do when you’re not at home and able to view everything in your closet. And for those who live in shoebox-sized apartments, you can tag exactly where to locate that belt or this sweater.

Based on what stores you shop at often, you probably have several discount cards in your wallet at any given time. But it’s easy to forget about them when you’re checking out, or when you’re in the neighborhood but don’t think to visit that particular store. Snapette ensures you won’t forget. The app alerts you when you’re close to a store you follow that is promoting a discount or giveaway at that particular moment.

Whether you’re super organized with everything or you just don’t want to waste your day wandering around when you could have a strategic shopping game plan, Pickn’Tell is the app for you. Pickn’Tell has an inventory of such stores as J. Crew, French Connection and BCBG, where users can check out events that store may be having, then base their shopping day around them.

Swirl is the total-package shopping app. From perusing others’ style to clipping items you like to your personal collections to shopping within the app to finding out about nearby deals, you can do it all within Swirl.

Wedding Wednesday! The Origins of 5 Interesting Wedding Traditions

The Origins of 5 Interesting Wedding Traditions

Weddings are multifaceted celebrations that are often steeped in tradition. Today, you can celebrate your family’s past by incorporating it into your own special day. To help you effortlessly combine the old and the new, the borrowed and the blue (or any other pop of color you may choose!), we share some charming traditions that have been passed down through the generations.

Below are 5 interesting wedding traditions and their origins.

Wedding party attire

Years ago, when people were slightly more superstitious, they were particularly concerned about evil spirits.  These spirits were perceived to be jealous of the happy bride and groom and, as a result, wished the couple harm.  To confuse these spectral enemies, the wedding party would dress in clothing similar to the nuptial pair.  By doing this, the groomsman and bridesmaids would confuse the evil spirits, rendering them unable to discern the actual bride and groom.

Wedding flowers

As another ward against evil spirits, brides of the past carried pungent collections of garlic, herbs and grains.  This tradition evolved into a beautiful, fragrant bouquet of flowers – many of which have specific meanings – which are thought to symbolize fertility and eternity.

Stomping the glass

At the end of Jewish ceremonies, the groom often steps on a cloth-wrapped glass or bulb, breaking it.  Wedding attendees yell “Mazel Tov!” (which literally translates to “good fortune” or “good luck” in Hebrew).  There are a few theories about the origin of the ritual: one suggests the breaking of the glass provides a symbolic reminder of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, whereas others claim it represents the fragility of a relationship or the breaking of old familial ties in favor of a new union.

Bachelor party

This tradition goes all the way back to when fifth century Spartans would celebrate with their soon-to-be wed friend the night before the ceremony.  There was eating, drinking, feasting and toasting.  These often-raucous parties (a la “The Hangover”) eventually evolved into more staid dinners hosted by the groom’s father or best man.  And now the ladies get to celebrate with their own version, the Bachelorette party!

Wedding cake

According to an article by Carol Wilson published in the Journal of Food and Culture, this delicious tradition may have evolved from Ancient Roman times when a piece of bread was broken over a bride’s head for good luck.  Today, wedding cakes come in every shape, size and design, and you can even go with an alternative dessert like cupcakes or macaroons!

These are a mere handful of wedding traditions – there are many, many more.  Keep an eye out for future David’s Bridal articles exploring more of these fascinating customs.

Who You Should Bring Dress Shopping!

Who You Should Bring Dress Shopping

You want to look your best on your big day and a large part of that is the dress, whether it is for prom or for your wedding. Shopping alone can be intimidating, so it never hurts to have a second opinion. Who you want to have with you depends on which of the following events you are shopping for.

Prom Dresses

It can be a good idea to shop for prom dresses in two stages:

Stage One

Go on a scouting mission with your most trusted besties. You want the girls who are not going to grab your favorite dress from under your nose. Select a few styles and make sure you aren’t all in love with the same prom dress (unless that’s a plan you have). Take pictures with your phone so you can think about the possibilities.

Stage Two

Now that you have an idea of what you want, take your mom with you to the store. It’s likely that she’s picking up the tab (which means she will want a say). Prom dress shopping is also a great time to reach out to her and show her how important her opinion is. By asking your mom to help you choose between three or four dresses you like, you will end up with something you like no matter what.

Bridal Gowns

Remember when prom was the biggest night of your life? The stakes are even higher with a wedding and for some brides that can be stressful. Fear not! Your wedding day truly is the biggest day of your life and if you’re lucky, you are surrounded by friends and family who want to help. Here are the two people to bring with you:

Your Mom

Your wedding is a big day for you. It is also a milestone for your mom. You’ll score big points if you include her in some of the important decisions. You’ll also benefit from her years of wisdom. Listen to her carefully before you make the dress decision.

Your Best Friend/Maid of Honor

This is likely the same person, but sometimes distance is an issue. This should be a girlfriend that you trust to give you an honest opinion in a kind way. She knows that you hate the way your (insert body part here) looks and she will help you camouflage it. Better yet, she knows you have a fabulous (insert body part here) and can help you find ways to highlight it! Ask her to take pictures so you can consider the dresses over a few days.

David’s Bridal stocks a wide variety of prom dresses and wedding dresses in a range of sizes designed to flatter all types of figures.

5 Tips to Look Best in Prom Photos!

5 Tips to Look Best in Prom Photos!

You spend enormous amounts of time picking out your prom dress and getting ready, so you should be sure to immortalize your effort in photographs. Your prom pictures are a lifelong reminder of one of the most exciting nights of your life. To ensure that your pictures look as great as you do, here are some quick tips.

Be Happy in Your Photos

It’s normal to be nervous when you are having your picture taken, but the best pictures are ones where you look natural. Have someone tell a joke or try to remember a funny story while pictures are being taken. You will look more relaxed and your smile will be genuine.

Strike a Pose

Being photographed straight on makes you appear larger than you are. This can be great for guys, but it is not typically a flattering pose for girls. Standing at a slight angle will make you appear narrower, and is also a great way to show off a bit of the luxe back detailing on your fab dress.

Tame Your Hair

Updos are a great way to do something different with your hair, but complicated styles may be difficult to achieve on your own. To ensure that your hair looks great and stays in place, have a professional style your hair for prom, or save your money and check out DIY video tips. Gently remind your date that a fresh haircut would look sharp with his tux.

Makeup and Grooming

You’ll want your makeup to last throughout prom, so use waterproof mascara, durable foundation and crease-resistant eye shadow. Remember that primer can help all those gorgeous colors stay where they belong. If you happen to be selected for prom royalty, have a compact ready for a quick fix before pics.

Picking an Outfit

Your prom dress should fit well and be as comfortable as possible. While prom attire will never be as cozy as your pajamas, you don’t want something you can’t move in. David’s Bridal offers lots of short prom dresses and super-danceable jersey options. Additionally, a few minor alterations can help you achieve the perfect fit.
