Shower in Style: Fresh Twists and New Themes

Shower in Style: Fresh Twists and New Themes

This is not your mother’s bridal shower! These fabulous pre-wedding parties now are so much more than the endless cake and champagne get-togethers of yesteryear. Build yours around one of my favorite themes and take it to the next level with food, fun, and festivities!

Feather Your Nest. Invite guests to an “Around the House” shower, where they’ll help you put together all the things you’ll need for your new home. This beautifully designed invitation says it all in pretty pictures.

Workshop It! As a special treat, hire an expert to entertain your guests with a short interactive workshop teaching them a stylish new skill—decorate cupcakes, dance salsa or arrange flowers. At the end of the party, let ladies take home the fruits of their labor—a tasty treat, some new moves, or a pretty posy.

Mix It Up. Invite the guys, too! Host a Co-ed “Cocktail Hour” Shower. Invite all your favorite guys and girls to help you stock your home bar with glasses, gadgets, wines, spirits and microbrews. Serve bite-sized hors d’oeuvres paired with miniature cocktails (think one-bite quesadillas and three-sip mojitos!).

Fresh Favors. Instead of gifting shower guests with throw-away gifts, end your fete with a fabulous “Goddess Bar.” Arrange boxes and bowls of indulgent treats—lip gloss, nail color, bath oil, potpourri—all bought on sale from discount stores, and let the ladies fill up organza pouches with their favorite take-home treats.

Big Day Do’s and Don’ts

Do personalize your ceremony.
Lighting a unity candle is a wonderful way to symbolize the joining of your two lives. You and your groom can light a candle, or you can invite your mothers or parents to join you, using two slender taper candles to illuminate the central pillar candle, thus bringing your families together. I love this personalizable Swarovski Crystal Unity Candle set because it is simple and elegant, with just a hint of sparkle.

Don’t be “in charge” on your wedding day.
Appoint someone else to be your representative while you relax and get ready for one of the most important moments in your life. If you don’t have a wedding planner, choose a super-organized friend who is not in your wedding party, and ask her to make sure things are how you want them. Review the main details of the day at least a week in advance, and give her a list of major elements in the timing of the celebration, along with key contact phone numbers so that she can deal with any issues that might arise. And make sure to give her a present to thank her, like this personalized heart keychain.

Do spend at least a few minutes alone.
You are entering a brand new chapter. Take a few minutes to sit quietly or take a walk and just live in your excitement and happiness. Focus on thankfulness—after all, you’ve been so lucky to find the one person you want to spend your life with. Let the power and beauty of that thought sink in.

I also suggest spending a few minutes alone with your new husband right after the ceremony. Arrange for refreshments to be waiting for you (think hors d’oeuvres and Champagne or sparkling water) and just enjoy the moment together.

Don’t forget to thank your parents.

Write a thoughtful note to your parents, and take a moment to give them each a small gift to show them how much they mean to you. For Mom, I love this Memory Box, which features an engraved message and can be personalized.

Do bring a “Bridal Kit.”

Think of it as “cosmetic update meets minor first aid kit.” Pack a great looking tote (like this personalized cosmetic bag below) with little things you might need, including a sewing kit, a stain eraser pen, safety pins, a nail file, extra lip gloss, fashion tape, aspirin, breath mints, a bottle of water, and a snack or healthy bar, just in case you forget to eat while you’re getting ready.

Do take it all in.
I heard a bride say once that her friend had told her to take mental “snapshots” during the wedding throughout the day, and I thought that was wonderful advice. During the ceremony or your first dance, for example, take a moment to look out at your family and friends and just take a picture of that scene in your head. It will help you remember how you felt for a long time to come.

THE GREEN PARTY: Infuse your Engagement Party and Rehearsal Dinner with Elegant, Eco-friendly Details

THE GREEN PARTY: Infuse your Engagement Party and Rehearsal Dinner with Elegant, Eco-friendly Details
Perhaps you’ve already given some thought to adding a few “green” touches to your Big Day. Maybe you’ve considered using local, seasonal flowers to support farmers and cut down on fuel and shipping needs, for example. Congratulations! Every choice you make can have a positive effect on protecting our planet, a goal we all share.
But with every wedding comes a number of “Satellite Celebrations” – those smaller parties, like your engagement party, shower and rehearsal dinner, to name a few. If you’re an Earth-friendly bride, you can look for ways to entertain with “less waste and more taste” all the way to your “I do’s”! Here are some of my favorite tips:

Green your invitations. While I am a firm believer in printed invitations for the wedding celebration itself, it is totally acceptable (and very environmentally aware) to use an electronic invitation service to let guests know about the smaller celebrations. I like www.evite.com for its fun and customizable designs, and it’s a piece of cake to track replies, which makes every bride’s life easier. If you prefer to print a card, consider choosing an eco-friendly option, like this one from www.davidsbridal.com

Throw a 100-mile party. The same concept I mentioned above about local flowers? Apply it to every part of your engagement party or rehearsal dinner. Try to feature food, drinks and other elements that are produced within 100 miles of the celebration. If you’re hosting the event at home, plan your menu around what’s in your local greenmarket. At a restaurant or country club, ask the chef to come up with delicious options that celebrate what is best where you are.

Design edible décor. Instead of typical flower arrangements, arrange baskets or bowls of nibble-friendly food on your tables: think small items that are easy to eat, like hunks of parmesan cheese, a selection of olives, nuts, fresh grapes or figs and crunchy breadsticks. Your tables will look abundant and feast-like, your guests will have fun sampling different flavors and nothing will go to waste at the end of the party because your guests will eat the décor! Nestle in votive candles (soy, of course!), add a clever mushroom place card holder for each guest and you’re good to go green!

Recycle your style. Paint old wine bottles and turn them into candle centerpieces. Gather those old vases everyone has around from a long-ago floral delivery and turn them into lanterns.
Mix recycled items and new elements for a super-chic style combination that also happens to be ever-so environmentally friendly. Think about ways to reuse any new décor you purchase for your wedding parties. If you’re hosting a rustic celebration, for example, check out these fabulous chalkboard signs—you can use them again and again on buffets, gift tables, or bars at all your casual get-togethers.

Don’t forget to share your good fortune. There’s just nothing as green as embracing the Three R’s. Reuse, Recycle, Renew. After each party, find ways to donate your leftovers to help others. Food can sometimes be difficult to donate because of legal restrictions, but check with your caterer to see if they are affiliated with a food bank or community kitchen. Décor (vases, candles, paper, and streamers, for example) may be able to be donated to a local school or arts foundation. Here in New York, my company gives leftover décor and supplies to Materials for the Arts www.mfta.org , a huge warehouse where schools and arts organizations can go “shopping” for props and elements for projects and productions. Check out what organizations are working in your area.
