It’s a cold, brisk morning when I arrive in Jersey City to meet the WPIX 11 news team. In the wee hours on the most anticipated day of the year—November 11, 2011—reporter Debra Alfarone and I prepare to surprise one very lucky viewer, Irene, with a makeover on her birthday. While in other parts of the country more than 20,000 brides are getting ready to walk down the aisle in their David’s Bridal wedding gowns, this New Jersey woman is about to have a surprise of a lifetime.
More than twenty five of Irene’s friends and family members are camped outside her front door in the WPIX Dunkin’ Donuts motor coach. One of eleven children, Irene would turn forty nine today. We soon discover that Irene has more than her birthday to celebrate including overcoming many obstacles this year that have challenged her role as a mother, aunt and sister. Despite all of these obstacles, Irene has decided to go back to school and start a new career, which is certainly something to celebrate!
When the sun came up, we knocked on Irene’s front door and surprised her on live television! Needless to say, Irene was beyond shocked by our surprise. When I revealed that David’s Bridal was giving her a special occasion dress, the expression on Irene’s face was quite simply, priceless. I quickly brought Irene into the motor coach to start trying on some fabulous special occasion dresses.
Despite having never met our mystery makeover candidate, the consultants at David’s Bridal in New York City pulled several gorgeous dresses to choose from. We were immediately drawn to the rich jewel tones and waist-cinching details of a deep purple jersey dress. Not only did it flatter her curves, it also complimented her skin tone, making it the unanimous winner!
